Here are three ideas for gentle hikes starting from Evolène, offering you an interlude in nature, a chance to breathe in the pure mountain air and marvel at the panoramic views, as an invitation to a walking meditation.
From Chemeuille to Arbey through Lana
Between scenic travel and unspoiled mountain pastures
Duration: 1h30
From Lana, a peaceful hamlet in Evolène that inspired writer Maurice Zermatten, the walk begins like a story. The chairlift ride is a real journey, punctuated with surprises that the mountain silently reveals to those whose gaze remains curious.
Up above, the view opens onto a magnificent natural balcony facing the royal couple of the Valais Alps: the Dent Blanche and the Matterhorn. From this unique vantage point, a path gently descends towards Lana, passing by Lake Arbey, a small alpine lake where the peaks are reflected in the water, offering a spectacle that changes with the light. A few traditional mayens, witnesses to agro-pastoral life, add a touch of authenticity to the beauty of the landscape.
An easy hike in a setting that looks like something straight out of a postcard.
From Evolène village to Volovron
A viewpoint overlooking the peaks
Duration: 2h30
If there were a ranking of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Val d'Hérens, Volovron would undoubtedly take first place. From the village, a forest trail climbs gently, and it takes no more than 90 minutes to reach this exceptional vantage point. Upon arrival, the view is spectacular: a panorama stretching across the valley and the peaks, from the Dent Blanche to the Pigne d'Arolla. Take out your cameras or paintbrushes. Capture the moment, sketch it, and contemplate it. It's the perfect place for a picnic in the sun and to let yourself be overwhelmed by the beauty of the moment.
And the added bonus? In autumn, this hilltop hamlet reveals its full magic, when the forests are ablaze with color and the sun-kissed chalets seem to watch over the valley.
From La Sage to Evolène
A bucolic descent along the Borgne River
Duration: 2h
To reach the starting point of this hike, the journey begins aboard the legendary postal bus, which takes us to the village of La Sage, a hamlet with incredible charm.
From there, the footpath leads towards Les Haudères, before following the course of the Borgne river to Evolène.
The route is rich in history and iconic sites: the chapel of La Sage, the library of Marie des Collines, the church of Les Haudères and its bell tower made of pebbles from the Borgne river, as well as the barns and granaries weathered by time, and many other treasures.
